More than 40 other students and passengers were injured in the school bus accident and were taken to local hospitals to receive medical treatment. One student has been put into a medically-induced coma.

The school bus was carrying fifth-grade students from East Brook Middle School as part of a field trip to historic Waterloo Village on May 17, 2018. The accident occurred around 10:20 a.m. when the school bus crashed into a red dump truck, causing the bus to overturn and split in two.

New Jersey state police and Morris County prosecutor’s office are investigating the crash. Authorities believe the bus driver missed an exit on Interstate 80 and made an illegal U-turn before crashing into the approaching dump truck.

The school bus, owned by Paramus school district, was equipped with seat belts. Authorities have not stated whether the driver of the bus will face any charges. Paramus has cancelled all remaining field trips for the rest of the school year.
