A woman was struck and killed by a car while walking along Route 17 Friday evening, according to Mayor Paul Sarlo.
Police have not provided details on the accident, though Mayor Sarlo stated that the woman had visited the White Castle on Route 17 in Hasbrouck Heights near Teterboro Airport just before the accident.
He said that after leaving the restaurant, she began walking southbound along the center divider in the highway and was struck just before midnight near the Wendy’s.
It remains unclear why the woman was walking along the center of the highway, but Mayor Sarlo stated that the crash appeared to be an accident.
The Importance of Pedestrian Safety
Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable users of the road. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one pedestrian dies in a traffic accident every two hours and 430 people are treated for injuries every 24 hours.
Because of these high dangers, it is important that pedestrians take steps to improve their safety when walking near highways. Pedestrians should:
- Cross the street at designated crosswalks only
- Make sure that they are visible to motorists, especially at night, by wearing reflective clothing and carrying a flashlight
- Always walk on the sidewalk; if one is not available, walk along the shoulder of the road
- Avoid distractions
Pedestrians who have been injured or killed by a negligent driver who was speeding, distracted, under the influence or engaging in any other reckless behavior may be entitled to compensation.
