Symptoms of Gynecomastia

Risperdal is frequently prescribed to treat mental disorders like dementia, bipolar disorder, autism and schizophrenia. Recent lawsuits and studies, however, indicate that the drug may be associated with increased levels of the hormone prolactin, which can lead to breast development in men.

Symptoms of gynecomastia may include:

  • Tenderness in the breast
  • Discharge from the nipples
  • Swelling

Although these problems may not be a critical health risk, they could generate emotional trauma for young men. It can also be challenging to reverse the impacts of gynecomastia and could require liposuction, mastectomy or surgery in extreme cases.

It is estimated that up to 25 percent of cases of gynecomastia today can be attributed to medications. Research published in 2006 in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology found that adolescents taking Risperdal developed higher levels of prolactin.

Another study published in 2009 in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psycho-Pharmacology indicates that young men who have taken Risperdal may have increased levels of prolactin for up to two years after stopping the medication.

Several lawsuits have been filed since the release of this information. If you or someone you love has developed male breasts after taking this medication, contact Lynch Law Firm to learn more about your options for filing a Risperdal lawsuit.

Risperdal Lawsuit Settlements

The manufacturer of Risperdal, Johnson & Johnson, has paid billions of dollars in settlements and fines associated with its promotion of this dangerous drug and the unfortunate side effects patients have experienced.

Once such agreement in 2013 involved more than $2 billion in civil and criminal fines for promoting the medication despite the health risks. This was the third-largest drug settlement at the time.

In 2016, a Philadelphia jury ordered Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, to pay $70 million to the family of a boy who suffered from gynecomastia after taking Risperdal.

Four additional cases have also been tried in Philadelphia, all of which produced verdicts ranging from $500,000 to $2.2 million.

Gynecomastia can be an embarrassing and frustrating condition for young men and is something that the drug’s manufacturer should have warned against. However, because the manufacturer failed in its obligation to provide a safe product, victims may be entitled to file a Risperdal lawsuit.
