Xarelto Bleeding Risks

Xarelto was originally introduced in 2011 as a modern alternative to Warfarin, another blood thinner medication that required constant dosage adjustments and strict dietary requirements for patients. Xarelto comes in a standard pill format and does not restrict a patient’s diet.

However, the drug has since been linked to uncontrolled bleeding. Although bleeding is a common complication of blood thinners, it has been alleged that Xarelto is more dangerous than other medications because there is no antidote to stop the bleeding once it begins.

In emergency situations, patients are at risk for irreversible problems and life-threatening complications.

Blood Clots Risks

Shortly after Xarelto was released to the market, several reports began to surface questioning the safety of the medication.

In 2011, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a report from staff reviewers who voiced their opposition to prescribing Xarelto to patients with atrial fibrillation.

By October 2012, nearly 350 adverse event reports had been filed with the FDA for serious and often fatal injuries. Of those cases, 158 involved blood clots, according to a report from QuarterWatch. Many of these cases involved blood clots in younger patients.

In 2016, the FDA began to evaluate the drug’s manufacturer to determine if the drug’s clinical trials were invalid. The devices used to monitor patients during the trial were later recalled for producing inaccurate results.

In the clinical trial, researchers compared more than 14,000 patients taking Xarelto to those taking Warfarin. The study concluded that Xarelto was not more effective than Warfarin and that patients’ risks in taking either medication were similar. However, uncontrollable bleeding was the most common side effect in patients.

Additional Side Effects

Xarelto has also been linked to a number of other serious side effects, including:

  • Red or pink urine
  • Weakness or dizziness
  • Wrongful death
  • Hemorrhagic stroke
  • Strange bleeding
  • Easy bruising
  • Brain hemorrhage
  • Muscle weakness
  • Gastro-intestinal bleeding
  • Loss of movement in a body part

The drug’s manufacturers, Bayer Healthcare and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, are responsible for letting patients and doctors know about the potential risks associated with a drug. When they fail to do this, innocent patients are put at risk for serious injuries.

Our experienced team of attorneys can help you hold these manufacturers accountable for the harm they caused through a Xarelto lawsuit. If you have suffered from any of these dangerous side effects, a Xarelto lawsuit can help you recover the compensation you need for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other expenses associated with your injuries.

If your loved one died after taking Xarelto, a lawsuit can also help you recover wrongful death damages.

Consolidated Xarelto Lawsuits

In December 2014, claims against Xarelto’s manufacturer were consolidated into multidistrict litigation in which groups of plaintiffs will represent the entire group of individuals who have filed lawsuits.

If you have experienced any of these complications after taking Xarelto your time is running out to file a Xarelto lawsuit. Do not hesitate to contact Lynch Law Firm today to get started.
