IVC Filter Warnings
Over a five-year period, from 2005 to 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received approximately 1,000 adverse event reports regarding IVC filter complications.
Because of this, the FDA released a safety communication in 2010 highlighting the complications associated with the device, including:
- 328 device migrations
- 146 detachments of pieces of the device
- 70 perforations of the inferior vena cava
- 56 device fractures
