History of Essure and its Side Effects

Essure was first released into the market in 2002 by Conceptus as a permanent birth control device that is inserted into the fallopian tube. Essure contains elements of nickel-titanium alloys that have caused severe allergic reactions to women with a nickel allergy.

In 2013, Bayer A.G. bought out Conceptus and assumed production, marketing and distribution control of Essure. Bayer is alleged to have hidden the harmful effects of Essure, including potential allergic reactions to nickel, the fact that the device can move or break apart, and that it can lead to unintended pregnancy.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received nearly 10,000 reports of allergic reactions, severe discomfort and abdominal pain since the device was first introduced.

The FDA announced in 2014 that it was conducting an investigation into the complaints received about Essure. In Feb. 2016, the FDA concluded that Bayer will have to conduct a study with 2,000 patients over a three year period with women who have the Essure device and others who received different treatment. Bayer must begin the study within 15 months and provide the results to the FDA within 30 days after the study has been concluded.

The FDA will also require Bayer to include a black warning box on the Essure package that warns users of the device’s possible harmful effects.
